On Friday, February 24, 2006, at 6:55 p.m., two officers from the mounted unit were patrolling in the Kingston Road/Lawrence Avenue East area.
It is alleged that:
− the officers were alerted by a citizen to a man in a car using the ATM drive−through on the southwest corner of Kingston Road and Lawrence Avenue East,
− the man was cursing and swearing at a driver in the line ahead of him,
− the officers approached the car and driver and told him to pull over so they could speak with him,
− the man turned eastbound on Lawrence Avenue East and drove away,
− the officers rode across Lawrence Avenue East from the south side to north side,
− the driver of the vehicle made a U−turn and came back westbound on Lawrence Avenue East towards Kingston Road,
− the man struck one of the officers and his horse with his vehicle then fled, leaving the officer and the horse in the roadway.
The officer suffered neck, back and rib injuries, and was taken to hospital with non−life−threatening injuries.
The horse, Brigadier, suffering from massive traumatic injuries, was euthanized by officers at the scene.
The suspect vehicle was located a short time later in the Orton Park and Lawrence Avenue East area, but the driver had fled prior to police locating the vehicle.
At 11:09 p.m., Dirk Sankersingh, 42, of Toronto was arrested and charged with:

1) Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm,
2) Fail to Stop at the Scene of Accident Bodily Harm.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday, February 25, 2006, at Old City Hall, room 101, at 10 a.m.
