Brigadier
Your kind has seen it all. On your collective backs has ridden History. From the east, unto the west, the ages echo with your footfalls; Even still, for those that listen closely enough! Now,….history continues:
In the heat of summer, and in the cold of winter; In heavy rain, or blinding snow— Partnered with your rider, you persisted. For those that were lost, you searched. For those that were weak, you did lend your strength. Against encroaching darkness, you resisted.
Your might was fearsome, though your manner was gentle. Authority rang with each step of your shod hooves, But the innocence in your eyes was inviting to those without malice. How many thousands of hands have stroked your soft muzzle!
Proud officers were prouder still, when they could see— The world from atop your shoulders. Your purpose: “Preserve the Peace”. Your practice: winning the tender affection of children and adults.
You bore our colours, and did make us proud— In all that you did, even to the last, When, as always, you were faster than your human partner— And you were able to save his life, Before he,….could save yours.
